If you transferred last year's TurboTax return over, the capital loss carryover has already been entered for you.

Otherwise, you may enter the capital loss carryover yourself:

  • Continue your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
  • Click Tax Tools (lower left side of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the I'm looking for: box, type carryover.
  • In the results box, highlight carryover, then click GO.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions. TurboTax will prompt you to enter your capital loss carryover. (Click the screenshots below for reference. The screenshots show TurboTax Premier Online, TurboTax Self-Employed, and TurboTax Desktop, respectively.)

Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function and the "Jump to" link (instead of "Tax Tools") to search for the topic.

Thank you for some very great information.  But, ultimately, this is not helpful as it relies on the software to search for a topic rather than just taking you to the area you need to enter the capital loss carryover.  The TurboTax software just hangs on the search and provides no place to jump to.  Very frustrating.
