If you pay rent on your primary residence, you might be able to claim a tax credit. These are awarded only on the state level—there is no federal renter’s tax credit.

Find your state from the list provided to learn what tax credits you may qualify for:

Am I eligible for a state renter's tax credit?

If you are self employed, rent can be deducted as a business expense on schedule C when the rent is for property used for the business.

Rent you pay for your primary residence is not reported anywhere on your federal tax return. However, if your state taxes personal income and offers what is sometimes referred to as a "renter's credit", you'll deal with that after you have completed the federal return, and started the state return.
