I received a 1099-R with a distribution code 4- Death Benefit and box 2a. and 9b. are "unknown". Majority of the gross distribution was for insurance premiums. What do I put as the taxable amount in TurboTax?

When you receive a 1099-R with a distribution code 4 (Death Benefit), it indicates an inherited IRA.

Here's what to do if boxes 2a and 9b are marked "unknown":

    • Box 1 (Gross Distribution): Enter the full amount from box 1 as the gross distribution.
    • Box 2a (Taxable Amount): Since box 2a is "unknown," you may need to calculate the taxable amount manually.
      • In TurboTax, once you enter code 4, it will ask a series of subsequent questions to determine how much, if any, is taxable.
    • Box 9b (Total Employee Contributions): This box shows the total after-tax contributions. If it's "unknown," TurboTax will guide you through this as well.
