1099-R received with my husband's TIN as beneficiary - amount in box 1 was distribution that occurred prior to his father's death

Should we call the bank and ask them to correct the 1099-R to reflect his father's TIN? My understanding is that this amount should be filed on his deceased father's final return which a refund will be due to my husband as the executor of the will.

Under these circumstances, yes, contact the custodian to issue a corrected Form 1099-R to your husband that does not include this distribution and to issue a new, original Form 1099-R in his father's name.

However, it's quite unusual for the custodian to make this sort of reporting mistake unless they mishandled the transfer of your husband's father's account to a beneficiary account.  That should be investigated.

Thank you!  Yes it's definitely wrong because the balance that was there after he passed was done via direct transfer to an inherited IRA and is correctly reported on the overall statement we received for the account. So it seems they incorrectly reported the TIN on the 1099-R for the distribution to him prior to his death.
