1099-R State Withholdings correct but unable to efile

Bottom line up front.  Disabled Vet and DFAS is the easiest place to adjust my withholdings so my correct state and federal withholdings are entered but error preventing me from e-filing comes up.  Message is "Form 1099-R (DFAS) Box 14a should not be greater than gross distribution amount.  The correct gross distribution amount (from Box 1) has been carried to box 16, and is greater than the state withholding (box 14a) but the system still reports it as an error and I can not e-file. Suggestions appreciated

Thank you AnnetteB6.  Have checked all of those entries and they are correct.  I think my problem is created by a logic check in the system as follows:

    1) My retirement income from 30 Years military service includes a fair amount of disability  and therefore that portion is non-taxable.  My 1099R only reflects the taxable amount in box 1 and 1a (has always been the case checking back 6 years).

    2) Last year, based on changes in income, I had to pay at the end of the year when filing, so I had to increase state and federal withholdings for this year.  The easiest place to adjust my withholdings was with my military retirement.

    3) The total of my federal and state withholdings (correctly reported on the 1099-R) now slightly exceed the taxable portion of my military retirement check since the non-taxable portion does not appear anywhere on the form.

From a logic perspective, it appears that I am claiming more federal and state deductions than I actually received but the numbers are correct (and I have checked the 'numbers are correct' box) but the system will not allow me to complete and file the return.  If I increase the amount in Box 1 to include the disability amount, my returns will not match the DoD 1099-R which could create problems.  I am at a loss on how to resolve this and complete/File for this year.

    Suggestions appreciated.

Unfortunately, your situation is not supported by the TurboTax e-file. You will have to print and mail your return.

Please see How do I print and mail my return in TurboTax Online? or How do I print and mail a return in the TurboTax for Windows CD/Download software? for instructions.

In future years you might want to make sure that the taxes withheld won't exceed the gross distribution in box 1 if you wish to e-file your return.

    Thank you for your service.

You should delete the import of the 1099-R that you did and re-enter the form manually, typing in the numbers yourself.  Sometimes weird data comes in with the import of the 1099 forms and you end up not being able to use them.

Thanks, I Will give that a try, I had manually entered the information originally since getting government computer systems to talk is a chore!

Despite having deleted the 1099-R information and re-entering it, I still get the same error message.  I made sure the information correctly reflects what is entered on the 1099-R, that I carried the gross distribution to box 16, and saved the file but the error checker still rejects the file for that one error and I can not get to the point of e-filing...

I have this exact problem. Deleted the 1099-R and retyped manually.  Error persist.

If box 14 has an amount and box 16 is blank put in the amount from box 2a in box 16.  If 2a is blank then put in the amount from box 1.
