Does anyone know how to determine the taxable amount (or if I need to) if that box was left empty?

There are multiple reasons why it could be empty which is why the program asks a bunch of questions to determine what is the taxable amount. You can leave it blank and go through all the questions, carefully answering where the money came from and what you did with it. The program will determine the taxable amount.
