Question

1099C

My husband passed away in December 2023 and I filed my tax as married filing jointly in 2023.

This year 2025, I received two1099C under his name for his debt owed (hospital bills).

Am I required to include this in my 2024 tax return if I file as a widow/single? Will the IRS go after me if I don't?

Thanks

I am sorry for your loss.

If you are not listed on the account as well, you are not required to report this income on your personal return.  However, if there is an estate open for him, it would be reportable there.

Since he passed away in a prior year, he has no tax return filing obligation for 2024 and you are not responsible to report this.
