Am I directed to form IT201 or does it get populated from my form 1040?

Several types of tax data entered in the federal tax return will flow to the state tax return.  You will still have to complete the New York state program interview before the state return will be completed.

Once the Federal Review is completed the program will take you through the state tax return.
