If social security income is your only income, you do not need to file a tax return because social security benefits by themselves are not taxable. However, if you have other income, you should enter your SSA-1099 on your tax return.  Depending on how much other income you have, some of your social security may be taxable. 

 

Do not enter your SSA-1099 as a W-2. Enter it in the retirement income section.
