Cannot Enter Social Security SSA-1099 Income

When I try to enter Social Security SSA-1099 Income, I just get a blank window.  Clicked "Start" the first time, and got a blank window.  After that, it showed $0 and Update, but clicking "Update" just resulted in a blank window.  After looking through some Community posts, entered "Social Security Income" and "SSA-1099" in the search function, and clicked on the "Jump To" link, but again both just resulted in a blank window.

What is the deal?

    Please clarify your question.

    Which software do you have

    • Online
    • Desktop/CD

    What version of TurboTax

    • Free
    • Deluxe
    • Premier
    • Home & Business.

Are you able to get through each of these steps?

    1. Select Wages & Income.
    2. Chose [Pickup where I left off] then select [Select Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099)]
    3. Or select Retirement Plans and Social Security1099-R, IRAs, 401(k), early withdrawals
    4. Select Social Security

Is this where you get the blank screen.

    Have you

    1. Logged out and
    2. Shut down the computer
    3. Then re-started it.
    4. Do you Know how to clear the Cash & Cokie's from your browser?
      1. If so , do that.

    Now log back into TurboTax

I am using a Dell XPS desktop running Windows 10 (which I have used Turbo Tax on for several years).  I am running Turbo Tax Deluxe 2023 (downloaded).  Last update was yesterday (when I started TT today it did not do an update).

I don't believe this is a memory issue.  I was able to enter 1099R and 1099INT data, and import 1099DIV data without any problem.  This morning I did a Clear Cache on the browser (Chrome), and restarted the computer.  No change.

One other thing I tried yesterday was to start a new return, and the first thing I did after entering the Personal Info data was go straight to Wages & Income -> Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099) and selected [blue] Start.  The window under the menus went blank.  When I went back, [blue] Start] was replaced by [gray] Update, it showed a value of $0.  Selecting Update results in the same blank window.

Incidentally, a few others not germane to the return I'm working on, e.g. Wages and Salaries and Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other behave the same way - blank window.  Note: I have not tried every selection.  While I used to be a SW Systems Engineer and Tester, it's not my job anymore...

If you can't enter your Social Security in the boxes try deleting the form. See this thread for things to try. There are posts for 2023 at the end,
    https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/retirement/discussion/i-keep-attempting-to-enter-both-my-spouse-and-my-ssa-1099-sm-but-turbo-tax-won-t-let-me-enter-any/00/1427062

In the box with $0 income double-click in that box and a Supporting Details window should open where you can enter the correct amount. Or highlight the box and use Ctrl + I to open the Supporting Details window

    VolvoGirl,

Please see my previous reply for more details.  Also, when I double-clicked on the Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099) $0. amount "box", an Amount Description box popped up saying:

    Social Security Benefits

Here are the Social Security and Railroad Retirement benefits you've entered so far:

    Social Security Benefits

and nothing else.  No data, nothing.

Try running turbotax in Adminstrator mode by closing turbotax then reopen turbotax right click on icon and "run as adminstrator".  This worked for me and can enter the SSA-1099 information.  Also must start in adminstrator mode every time you start turbotax.

slimtex, you nailed it!  I had called TurboTax Tech Support, and the guy I talked said he had never seen my issue before, but we used Form view to enter some of the data.  However, running TurboTax in Administrator mode did the trick 100%!  Thanks for the tip slimtex!

I keep getting a blank screen when I use the jump to feature.

Has anyone figured a way around this issue?

Try this, if you are using TurboTax Desktop.

    1. Save your tax return.  Close the TurboTax program.
    2. Right click on the TurboTax 2023 icon on your computer screen.
    3. Click on Run as Administrator
    4. Start the TurboTax program and continue your tax return.  See if the problem has been resolved.

If you are using TurboTax Online, try this:

    1. Log into your return, then click pick up where I left off.
    2. Select Tax Tools from the left menu.
    3. Select Tools
    4. Select Topic Search
    5. Search ssa 1099, and select go.

If this doesn’t work, then contact support for additional assistance.

It sounds like you may not have entered your SSA income in the correct section. Try going back into Wages & Income and deleting the entry, then re-enter it following these instructions.  @alaskataxfiler

Related issue. I have a SS Benefits 1099-SM and Turbo-hax bug demands a 6 digit business code which does not exist on the 1099. What's the deal? Program waits until the very end, won't allow e-file, and shafts me with a 'you can mail in a copy'. Very poor value for $80 and I'm thinking a refund is due.

Not to mention another bug. Asked if I wanted to use the same bank auto deposit as last year. I said yes, the routing number and account number are the same, but Turbo-hax fails to accept that as well. What's the deal??

I'm on a MacBook, with MacOS Sequoia, and there is no "run as administrator" option. It delayed me for about a week but here is what finally worked, from another post:

Last Resort if the above doesn't work?

    1)  Switch to "Forms Mode"

    2) in the top-left window, click on "Open Form"

    3) in the search box type in "Social"

    4) Click on the "Social Security Benefits Worksheet" and then the "Open Form" button.

Try deleting any information here, especially the details inside the fields. This might get everything to work normally. If not then:

Then you can enter your SSA-1099 data in the A-thru-E section, directly on the form....but Yeah, some of it may be confusing.
