The CSA 1099R does not have a box 16a. Do I put in the taxable amount in box 2a for box 16a?

Go through and verify all of your steps and make sure you have entered all the information correctly  Go to:

    1. Open or continue your return.
    2. In the Federal section, select Wages & Income.
    3. Scroll to locate Retirement Plans and Social Security.
    4. Select Start or Revisit next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)......
    5. When it asks what Type of 1099R is it, be sure to mention it is CSA 1099R Civil Service annuity. This is a common mistake that many overlook so i put this in.. See screenshot 1.
    6. Record the 1099R as it is on your hardcopy.
    7. As you go through the questions, be sure to say you need to figure out how much is taxable. See screenshot 2.
    8. In the next screen, you will answer specific information about the plan including the annuity start date, plan cost (the amount of contributions you made into the plan), and the number of payments your received in 2023. See screenshot 3.
    9. Next screens will ask if this is a joint and single annuity. It will ask your age and if you are under the retirement age for this plan.
    10. Once done, your taxable amounts will be determined and reported on your return and hopefully, no error messages.
    11. Here are the screenshots. Don't enter these actual numbers as these are here for illustration purposes only.

This still does not enter an amount in the 16 box. Should I just enter the amount in Box 14?

I entered my 1099 as a CSA1099R. My CSA 1099R does not have a box 16. The CSA 1099R input screen does not have a box 16 which is the State Distribution for the state tax withheld. Box 2a on my CSA1099R shows the Taxable amount. But in the final review Turbotax won't let me Efile unless box 16 is full.

My wife's 1099R has a box 16 which is the same as her box 2a Taxable amount. The 1099R input screen for her 1099R has a box 16 which is the same amount as box 2a, Taxable amount.

To clarify, what version of Turbo Tax are you working in? If you are working in the software version, you may go to the forms mode in your return and then go directly to the 1099R that reports the CSA distribution. You can enter the amount directly on the 1099R in Box 16 to satisfy the program.

If you are using Turbo Tax online, let me know. We will need to investigate further to find out why Box 16 is not appearing in your program.

Normally, this shouldn't be an issue at all because the federal and state distribution is reported without having to report Box 16. With this said, if there is an entry in Box 15, you may wish to remove it to see if this makes a difference.

    Using Turbotax online.

And box 16 it probably shouldn't appear for a CSA1099R because there is no box 16 on the CSA1099R issued by OPM
