Do I have to file taxes on my own for a 1099 of $2300. When I am a dependent on someone else's taxes?

    Yes, typically income reported on a Form 1099-NEC is considered to be self-employment income.  If you receive self-employment income, then consider any expenses you would claim against that income.  If your net amount (gross income minus expenses) is $400 or more, then you are required to file a tax return of your own, even if you are being claimed as a dependent.

     

    Be sure that when you do file your return that you indicate that you are being claimed by someone else.  If you do not do that, then the person claiming you can have an issue filing their return.
