Question

Do I need to get a corrected 1099-G if the unemployment compensation is greater than what I actually received?

You don't need to do anything - It is the responsibility of the state unemployment insurance agency to accurately report your unemployment benefits and to correct any errors in that reporting. Let them do their job.

Also, how do you know the 1099-G needs to be corrected? The state's accounting & payment procedures may not mesh with your records of payments.

IRS says: If your 1099-G has the wrong amount, report it to your unemployment division and have them issue a corrected 1099-G as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, file with the correct amount on your Form 1040.
