The exception to the penalty for early withdraw is if you become totally and permanently disabled. So if you were just in the hospital, there is no exception.

There is an exception for any amount that exceeds 7.5% of your adjusted gross income used for unreimbursed medical expenses. If you have large medical expenses, there might be an exception you can take advantage of.
