Question

Does Turbo Tax account for the MD Military Retirement Income change for 2018? It was $5000 for tax year 2017, and has changed to $15000 for retirees over 55.

Yes, TurboTax accounts for the MD Military Retirement Income change for 2018.  If you received military retirement pay, in order to calculate the Military Retirement Pay Income Tax Deduction, you must mark the "Active Duty Military Retirement" Box in the 1099-R input screen.  To get back to your 1099-R entry in TurboTax online, please follow the steps below.

  • Click "Take Me To My Return"
  • Click "Federal" from the left side of your screen
  • Scroll down and click "Start or Edit/Add" next to "IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)"
  • Click "Edit" next to your Military 1099-R
  • Continue through the TurboTax interview questions and when you get to the question "Where Is This Distribution From?" choose "Active Duty Military Retirement".
