Solved

For 2021 I was 20, could not be a dependent, and earned $7000. I was at college for only 4 mos (not 5 or more). TT says no refundable Am. Opp. credit. Error? Help, pls.

I believe I qualify for the refundable portion of the American Opportunity Credit ($1000), and I think the software is wrong because it thinks I qualify to be a dependent. I met all the other criteria. I answered all questions correctly.

It depends.

  1. Go to my info section of your return and press edit next to your name
  2. In the page marked Your Personal Information>go to section 3 and see if the box is marked "yes" that says Someone else can claim me as a dependent on their tax return. Make sure this is a "no" answer.
  3. Also look through your selections when you claimed the AOTC, make sure you checked that you are at least a 1/2 student with no felony convictions.

You can’t get the refundable portion if you have a living parent and do not earn more than half of your support. See pub 970 bottom of page 21.
