Question

Form CSA 1099R

I am paid a set amount each month on Civil Service. When I start completing the

questions after I click on the CSA 1099R, it states "since Donald is over 72 in 2020" and it talks about RMD. I am 71. Anyway, I don't have a RMD.  It leads me to questions of "Yes, some of the withdrawal." or "No-none of this withdrawal was RMD." My retirement has nothing to do with an RMD.

My wife is a retired school teacher. I get the same thing when I try and put her Form 1099R in. Last year I just put both of these as "W-2's." What am I doing wrong? I want to complete this correctly.

ALL pension payments on a CSA 1099-R ARE a RMD if over age 70 1/2.   OPM itself says that it is.

Nothing about the RMD question go on a tax return.  The only purpose of the question is to prevent a rollover of a RMD and periodic pension payments are not eligible for rollover.

Say it was all a RMD.

OK ! I put YES ! Then it asked me :

X  Did you move this money to another retirement account (or returned it to the same retirement account) or

Did you do something else with it (Cashed out, etc)       The "X" shows what I checked

    Then it asks me:

X Did you roll over all of this money?

Did you roll over part of this money to another account? The "X" showed what I selected.

Are the 2 questions I checked properly as I should? (Just seems so dumb to ask people that are on a set pension these questions)

Thanks--I would like to do this right this year even though I will get the same amount if I just show these as W2's like I did last year.

That is a bug in TurboTax that has been there for years. Say no to the rollover question (even if you say yes it will not show as a rollover on the 1040 form  as a rollover.    TurboTax follows the rules even if it asks inappropriate questions.
