They are two different forms that report two different types of income. Enter each exactly as they appear.

If you were a railroad worker, you didn’t participate in the Social Security program. Instead, you contributed to a similar retirement program administered by an independent agency called the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB). The RRB issues the following two forms to report your benefit payments:

Form RRB-1099, Payments by the Railroad Retirement Board

  • Reports social security equivalent benefits (SSEB) payments.
  • The form is blue.
  • Enter this form in the Social Security section

Form RRB-1099-R, Annuities or Pensions by the Railroad Retirement Board

  • Reports non-social security equivalent benefits (NSSEB) payments.
  • The form is green.
  • Enter this form in the IRA, 401(k), Pension Plans (1099-R) section.

Although these forms are similar, they are entered in different places. Type “RRB-1099” or “RRB-1099-R” in the Search box, depending on the form you want to enter, and then select the “Jump to” link. This will take you directly to the section where you can enter your form.
