Question

How can I avoid getting a $27 credit because TurboTax is trying to charge me $78 to file. All because I have a $27 credit for my retirement plan.

Go back to the My Info section and edit your personal information.  For occupation enter Student.  That will remove the Saver's Credit so you can continue using the Free edition.

    If your income is low you should not be paying for tax software,
