Question

How can I stop TurboTax from filling federal income into state income boxes? I was active duty out of TN (no income tax) then earned income in AL as civilian.

TN isn't in the dropdown for states (because there's no income tax, presumably) and if I put in 0's TurboTax removes them.  AL rejected my return because the numbers don't add up, but I can't change the AL return numbers directly.

I'm can't see your W-2, but what I think you mean is that it shows TN in box 15 and the Tennessee wages in box 16. If so, you should not enter those numbers and information when you enter your W-2 in TurboTax, since Tennessee does not have an income tax.

You would enter AL in box 15 and complete boxes 16 to 20 for your Alabama wages though. That should result in the correct income being reported on your Alabama tax return.
