Question

How do I account for a 401A amount (in lieu of social security) that is placed in the W-2 under Box 14. Which category from TurboTax dropdown list should I choose?

401A is used by state and government employees in lieu of paying directly to social security. https://www.irs.gov/government-entities/federal-state-local-governments/government-retirement-plans-toolkit

Employers can put just about anything in box 14; it's a catch-all for items that don't have their own dedicated box on the W-2.

In TurboTax, enter the description from your W-2's box 14 on the first field in the row. Enter the dollar amount and select the correct tax category that goes with that description.

If none of the categories apply, scroll to the bottom of the list and choose Other–not on above list. Don’t worry. We'll figure out if it impacts your return or not. If we need more information, we'll ask you.

If box 14 is blank, just skip over it. Don't enter a 0 for any blank boxes.

Employer contributions to 401(a) or 401(k) plans are exempt from federal income tax, so they should not be reported on the Form W-2.

Also, designated Roth contributions are subject to federal income tax withholding, social security and Medicare taxes and must be reported on Form W-2
