Question

How do I enter a recharacterization from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA into Turbotax when I did not and will not receive a 1099-R?

I recommend that you contact your IRA administrator and request the form.  This would be the easiest course of action.

If that is not possible, you can prepare a substitute Form 1099-R within TurboTax:

Follow these steps:

  1.  Federal Taxes
  2. Select Wages and Income
  3. Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  4. Select IRA, 401(k), Pension Plans (1099-R)
  5. On the screen Tell Us Which 1099-R you have, select I need to prepare a substitute 1099-R and continue through the prompts with the information you have available.
