Now that I learned in this form: Even though my Social Security benefits from Turkey is not taxable by IRS, due to the taxation treaty, they are taxable by CA state FTB.  Could someone pls tell me how I wiil enter this adjustment to income to my CA return in Turbotax deluxe desktop app?

I ve been receiving this benefit since Apr 2019.  Will I need to ammend my CA taxes since 2019?  Could it be done via Turbotax?

    1. Both methods show the income which is the main thing. However you feel most comfortable reporting the income and understanding your return is what matters most. If CA FTB asks questions, you can respond.

    2. If you have been using the desktop software, you should have it in your files where you can download again if you changed computers. Otherwise, you will already have what you need. You can amend back as many years as you want. You can only claim a refund for 3 years but since you are adding income, you are not expecting a refund.

    3. Yes, you can amend a second time. See Second Amendment instructions.

You will need to show the income as taxable on your federal return and file your state return only. Then go back and adjust the income on your federal return to reflect it not showing as taxable and then file that return. This may entail mailing in your California return if you are unable to electronically file it before you file your federal tax return. Add the foreign social security income to your U.S. amount on your form SSA-1099 and make one entry in TurboTax.

You will need to amend your previous year tax returns if when you enter the social security income your state tax increases. You will see an option to do that on your home page when you log into TurboTax. Look at the bottom of the page, under Your Tax Return and Documents. Click on the year you want to amend and choose the Amend (Change) option.

    Thank you for answering.

I do however feel uncomfortable changing my national SSA-1099 numbers.  They go with the actual statement I had gotten from our SSA.

Instead of temporarily changing my SSA-1099 income, to get the correct SS income transfer to my CA return, I feel entering income adjustment in the CA return only, might be better.  in

"Here's the income Caifornia Handles Differently" section there is a Miscellaneous category.  The last item in that category is "Other Adjustments to Income".  Would not entering this foreign SS benefit, CA will consider taxable make more sense?

Secondly I use   windows desktop Turbotax Deluxe yyyy application.  Desktop applications only see the turbotax files of the same year.  It appear I have to reinstall my prev years Turbotax applications to be able amend those years CA taxes?  I do hope amending is possible al the way back to 2019?

Lastly I had to amend my 2022 taxes once, can I amend it again?
