It depends.  If you are indicating the social security income should be taxed on your Michigan (MI) return, it is not taxable.

  • Social Security payments are not taxed in Michigan. Any Social Security retirement income that is considered taxable on your federal income tax return can be subtracted from your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) when filing your state taxes in Michigan.

If you are asking how to remove an amount that was taxable on your federal return it should be handled automatically on the MI return without your manual actions.

When you have your federal and MI return completed you can choose to Preview My 1040 which will also allow you to see a Summary of the MI return showing federal adjusted gross income (AGI) and any income subtractions.

On the menu bar on the left that shows.

  1. Select Tax Tools
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. On the pop-up menu
  4. Select View Tax Summary
  5. On the left sidebar, select Preview my 1040
