How do you get Turbo Tax to make NYS employees retirement pension as a tax deduction on NYS income tax returns?

    In the federal section:

    Please go back to the federal section. 

    1. Scroll down to retirement
    2. Edit your 1099R.
    3. continue
    4. Be sure to answer all the questions. Double check, safety officer, which state
    5. There are many including, Where is this Distribution From, 
    6. click on NY State and Local (the second box)
    7. Continue
    8. Select From a Qualified Plan
    9. What did you do, cashed it
    10. Periodic Payments
    11. Select Yes
    12. keep going

    In the state:

    1. Select the State  Taxes tab
    2. As you navigate through the screens, you will see a screen that says Changes to Federal Income.
    3. Scroll down to Wage and Retirement Adjustments
    4. The first entry below that will say Received Retirement income.  
    5. Start/ Edit
    6. Retirement Distributions Summary, Done
    7. On the screen titled Governmental Pension Exclusion enter the taxable amount to exclude from the NY return. Here is where you would enter the full amount of your retirement distribution.
    8. Continue
    9. The next screen will show you the Pension Deduction Summary

    Governmental Pension Exclusion 
Enter or verify your Pensions of New York State and local governments and the federal 
govemment 
Did you receive a pension or other distribution from a New York State or local government 
pension plan or federal government pension plan?
