Question

How enter an RMD for an account where no 1099-R was received as distribution was taken from another account

I am using Turbo Tax Premium 2024. An account was rolled over to another account without any distributions being taken from that account. More than the RMD was taken from the new account. I am not able to enter the RMD from the old account since there is no 1099-R from this financial institution, nor am I able to indicate that only part of the distribution from the new account was an RMD with the RMD for that account being 0. So far I've spent close to 3 hours with various help folks with no solution other than it can't be done without upgrading to Turbo Tax Live at an additional cost. This doesn't seem right as it appears to be a glitch in the system. Any suggestions other than to use another program?

You are not required to file Form 5329 if you met all of your RMD for 2024. You can indicate at the end of the interview that you met all of your RMD. When you met your RMD for 2024, you don't have a penalty on Form 5329. Therefore, Form 5329 will not get sent to the IRS.

In TurboTax Desktop:

  1. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  2. Click on “Jump to 1099-R” and enter your 1099-R
  3. On the "Required Minimum Distribution" screen enter RMD for this account ($0)
  4. On the "Your 1099-R Entries" screen click "Continue"
  5. On the "Did You Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" screen select "None of these plans failed to withdraw the RMD" if you met all of your RMD for 2024, otherwise select what is applicable.

I'm using the online version so do not see the option to Jump to 1099-R. I manually clicked through and followed your suggestions and was able to finally get to a screen to enter the RMD for the closed account where no distribution was taken.

Now I have an additional question on a couple of other 1099-Rs where there was no entry in Box 16 State Distribution. When I click continue without making an entry it seems to be in a review loop. Suggestions for how to get out of this review loop?

Also I keep getting asked on a page titled "Just a few more details about your RMD" asking for a yes or no answer to Did I take out remaining RMD within the correction window. This does not apply as the remainder was taken from another account. If I select No (which is the correct answer) I get into a review question where it says to select "no response", but that returns to review needed loop. It also keeps returning to this question if I do not answer and just select Continue.

Please follow these steps in TurboTax Online:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R” and enter your 1099-R
  4. Continue until "How much of the $XXXXX was a RMD?" screen and select "Only part of this distribution was a RMD" and enter the amount of RMD (since this distribution includes RMD for other IRA accounts you included the amount here)
  5. Enter the RMD amount for this account on the "Let's get more information about your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)" screen ($0)
  6. On the "Review your 1099-R info" screen click "Continue"
  7. On the "Did You Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" screen select
  8.  select "An IRA..."
  9. On the "Total RMD for all other IRAs" screen enter the RMD from your other IRAs (where you didn't take a distribution from).

If entered correctly, you shouldn't get the correction window question since you met the RMD for 2024.
