Question

How exactly do I refile after a recharacterization from Roth to Traditional?

I filed my taxes for a max contribution to a Roth IRA. I then discovered after some bonuses that I was over the max allowable Roth limit. I have recharacterized to a traditional but now need to refile. I've read a ton on the IRS website but am still confused as to how to go about this, exactly what I am required to file?

Thanks.

When you amend the return you will remove the ROTH contribution you entered and enter a traditional IRA contribution instead ... then follow the interview screens to indicate if you want any or all of it  to be a non deductible contribution.   Doing this will populate the form 8606.

Did you have money in any IRAs when you started all this ?

if answer is  No, then you can use the BackDoor loophole to restore your Roth IRA contribution.

You must not take any deduction on the Traditional IRA amount.
