How is Excess social security and tier 1 RRTA tax withheld calculated?

The maximum amount which a person must pay in social security tax is $8,339.80 (which is 6.2% of $132,900). If you have paid more than this amount through your forms W-2 (box 4), then there is an excess tax withheld.

 

How you can I get a refund of the excess depends on whether you have one or several employers in the year.
