How to exempt earnings from state income taxes.

Part 1 of the question

My 1099R did deduct federal taxes (10%), how do I know that TT is calculating that correctly since my refund is substantially smaller then in the past

Part 2 of the question

I received my 1099R form and box 2a is filled in because I do have to pay federal taxes, but I do not have to pay state taxes on those earnings.  How do I exempt this from my state form (MA - I have confirmed that my pension is not taxable on the state level.) so I am not taxed.

Thanks in advance,

Barbara

You can view your form 1040 while working in TurboTax by using the following menu tabs:

    1. Tools
    2. Tax Tools (left side of the menu bar)
    3. View Tax Summary
    4. Preview my 1040 (left menu bar)

The taxable portion of your pension would show in line 4(b) of form 1040. The tax withheld on your 1099 form would be shown on line 25(b).

To view a summary of your Massachusetts tax return, first go into the state program in TurboTax, then use the steps just mentioned, but stop at View Tax Summary. You should see your pension distribution under the Deductions section.
