How to file for a person that passed away on 1/26/20023

The person in question died intestate on 1/26/2023. As a personal representative (not a court appointed rep), I am questioning what is the appropriate way to file this return. Is it considered to be a final, or will I have to submit a 2023 tax return for the deceased. If final, how do I sign for the deceased? Can this be E-filed?

Yes, you can e-file a decedent return. For tax year 2022, you can use TurboTax Online or Desktop to report the decedent's income during 2022.

For tax year 2023, the return will be for the period from January 1, 2023 to the date of death. And the return is due on April 15, 2024. You should wait for the tax program for tax year 2023 before filing the 2023 tax return.

How or who should sign this return. Should on sign as my name as the Personal Rep, or e-file as the decendent?

As the personal representative, you must file and sign the return as "personal representative".

In the My Info section of TurboTax, on the decedent's information page, click on the radio button: I'm preparing this return for [first name], who has passed away.
