How to report spouse RMD received the year after death

My spouse passed in late 2023. His death was reported on our 2023 joint return and I was planning to file as single for 2024.  In early 2024, before I was able to roll his IRA into mine, his 2024 RMD of $700 was automatically deposited into our joint account.  How do I report this small distribution on my 2024 tax return?

This would be reported as a retirement distribution on your tax return.  You should have received a Form 1099-R reporting the distribution, even if it's in your spouse's social security number.  You can disregard that and report it as if it was yours. The income goes on your return since it was received after 2023. Filing Single is the right filing status if you have not remarried and have no dependents.

Be sure to answer that it was an RMD to any questions that come up after you enter it.
