Question

I am a 16 year old who is filing for the first time. My mother collects social security check for me. Does my mother file that on her taxes?

No, your mother does not report your social security income on her tax return. But she can claim you as her dependent.

If you only have social security income, you are not required to file a tax return.

If your income is wages reported on form W-2, you are not required to file a tax return if you earned less than $12,400. However, if you had taxes withheld, you can file a tax return to claim a refund.

If your income is self-employed income reported on form 1099-NEC, you are required to file a tax return if you earned more than $400.

If you file a tax return, you have to indicate in TurboTax that you can be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
