I am getting a prompt to "check this entry". What do I do? Where do I enter the "PA taxable compensation" on PA-40?

When you go through that actual state program, it asks you questions. The scenario is different depending on your residency status. As a full year resident, all income would be taxed. When you are part-year, it will have a Compensation Summary of all your employers listed with an edit button. Edit each employer and mark if PA taxable or not. It is easy to click done rather than actually looking at the page.

Go back through the program and mark what is taxable, amounts earned while a resident.
