That is because Social Security Administration does not have one.  The EIN is usually for employers. It sounds that you are in the wrong section of data entry. Please follow steps below to enter social security benefits:

  1. Click on Federal Taxes
  2. Click on Wages and Income
  3. Scroll down to the Retirement Plans and Social Security
  4. Select Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1009)

I used form SSA-1099 and when I run the federal review it is asking for additional information like the payer's federal ID number and address.

It happens to me too. I believe it's a software flaw. I hope TurboTax fix it ASAP.

The IRS has approved a work-around for this of using an EIN of 00-0000000

If you are trying to enter social security income into TurboTax and you are being asked to enter EIN information, you are entering it in the wrong spot.   Do not use 00-0000000 for social security income.   You will get an error when you e-file and will most likely receive an inquiry from the IRS later.   Social Security income is taxed in a completely different way than any other form.   So, if you don't enter it in the correct spot, your taxes will not be calculated correctly.   @T2qMom

To determine if your Social Security income is taxable, all you need to do is enter that income. TurboTax does the rest!    At the state level, many states exempt Social Security from taxation, either partially or completely. Again, if your sole income is from Social Security, it's likely you don't need to file a state return either.

TurboTax will automatically figure out whether you need to pay federal and/or state taxes on your Social Security income. Just enter your SSA-1099 information in TurboTax and we’ll let you know!

What can we do to bypass  putting in Social Security Administration EIN/TIN? It's not on the SSA-1099-SM.

@kenyattabalewa31   You are on the wrong screen.  Social Security goes somewhere else.  Get out of this screen,

Enter a SSA-1099, SSA-1099-SM or RRB-1099  under

Federal Taxes on the left side or top

Wages and Income

Then scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security

Then the second line - Social Security (SSA-1099. RRB-1099) - click the Start or Revisit  button

@bobbilynnfagan Not sure what you are trying to do here.    The users above were not employees of the Social Security Administration and did not receive W-2's from Social Security.   They received benefits from Social Security which were reported on a document called a SSA1099.   The users were trying to enter their SSA1099s in the wrong place in the software.   A SSA1099 does NOT have an EIN---the fact that they were looking for an EIN is a huge clue that they were in the wrong place in the software to enter Social Security benefits they had received.

Users should NEVER post their phone number or e-mail addresses in this user forum.  This is a public user forum which can be seen by anyone---including scammers and identity thieves who troll for unsuspecting users and want to contact them and pretend to be from TurboTax.   The filter removes phone numbers and e-mail addresses for the protection of the users.

There is no payer ID for Social Security benefits received.  You are in the wrong section of the program to enter the SSA-1099.  Social Security benefits are not entered in the W-2 section or the Form 1099-R section for retirement income.

To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ssa-1099

SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION - Payer's TIN: XX-XXXXXXX.

SSA furnishes its EIN on Form 1099-NEC with respect to social security disability attorney fees paid to attorneys that represent claimants.

It's not on Form SSA-1099.  Unaware of any reason why a recipient of social security benefits reported on Form SSA-1099 would need the SSA's TIN, which is an Employer Identification Number (EIN), for preparation of the recipient's individual income tax return.

Can’t complete my taxes as it keeps asking for complete address and win number for Social security. Had this problem last year with Tax act and turned to Turbo tax only to encounter the same issue. Frustrated!!!

If it's asking for an EIN number you are entering it in the wrong place. There is no EIN on social security SSA-1099.  So delete it and enter it in the right place.

If you only get ssi or SS or SSDI it is not taxable and you do not have to file a return.

Try going to the search box and type in SSA-1099 or Social Security Benefits.  That will give you a Jump To link to take you directly to it.

OR

Enter a SSA-1099, SSA-1099-SM or RRB-1099  under

Federal Taxes on the left side or top

Wages and Income

Then scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security

Then the second line - Social Security (SSA-1099. RRB-1099) - click the Start or Revisit  button

Did that and that’s where it’s still asking for address and win number!
