Question

I cashed in an insurance policy and received a 1099-R. There is no distribution code in Box 7. It requires a code before proceeding... what do I put?

It's probably there.  It's somewhat common for people to overlook a code 7 in box 7 because the code is the same as the box number.

For sure nothing is there.  We have other 1099-R's and the codes are there but not on this one.  Thanks for your response.

Then contact the issuer for a corrected 1099-R since that one is not valid.  Box 7 is required to have a code.  You cannot file without it.
