I did not work in 2019 - medical reasons. Just started getting retirement as of 2020. do I need to file St or Fed?

It depends.

 

For 2019, you may not have a filing requirement if you did not have any income. 

 

Generally, you must file a return if your gross income is at least:

  • $12,200 for Single
  • $24,400 for MFJ
  • $5 for MFS
  • $18,350 for HOH
  • $24,400 for Qualifying widower

Do I need to file a return

 

For 2020, you will receive Form 1099-R for any retirement distributions made.  You will need to file a return then if you meet the filing threshold requirements.
