Question

I get a review error on a 1099-R saying that my state tax withheld cannot be greater than the gross distribution. It is not greater. What can I do to remediate?

Some states require you to have a state distribution amount in box 16.

Edit the 1099-R, and either put the value of box 2a into box 16.....or on a follow-up page, which displays the state taxes withheld, you have a state distribution blank that needs to be filled in with the value off box 2a.

If box 2a is empty, you can probably just use the value in box 1 instead,,,especially if you didn't make any after-tax contributions to that retirement account.
