Question

I have a 1099-NEC from Wag. It's asking how the payer's federal ID number is formatted. Neither option matches the 1099. Which do I chose? xx-xxxxxxx or xx-xxx-xxxx?

Please double-check that the EIN does not match the first format. If there are not enough numbers to be able to use the payer's federal ID number, you can file to report your self-employment without using the number.

You can report the sum total of the income you received and report it as other self-employed income.  To do this please follow these steps:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax
  2. Search for self-employment income (use this exact phrase, don't add a hyphen) and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results, or go to Wages and Income and scroll until you see Self-Employment
  3. Answer Yes on the Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? screen
  4. When you get to the Let's enter the income for... screen you can enter the payments as "check" or "cash" under Other self-employed income.

The details of the 1099-NEC are not necessary as long as you report all the income you received.
