Question

I have filed my 2018 federal return. I then found that I over contributed to Roth 401k at work during 2018. Do I need to file an amended 2018 return?

Yes, excess Roth 401k contribution is in process of being returned (in 2019).

Did you have the excess returned?   Was it returned in 2018 or 2019?

You will need to amend 2018 to report the return on your 2018 tax return as returned wages.   If you had not already filed then you could report it now and avoid amending.  Since you already filed then there is no reason to amend prior to receiving the actual 2019 1099-R with a code P in box 7, next January.
