Question

I have my military retirement pay and Social Security pay. North Caroline does not tax any of the above. What form(s) do I have to file if any?

Since your military retirement pension and social security benefits are exempt from NC tax and assuming you are not filing as "Married Filing Separately" with your spouse is itemizing, then you do not need to file in NC.  Here is the NC table of filing requirements.

Your military retirement pay is taxable at the federal level and some of your social security benefits may be taxable federally as well.  First, you will need to determine if any of your social security is taxable.  A rule of thumb is take 1/2 of your social security benefits and add any other income you have and if the total exceeds $25,000 some of your social security may be taxable.

Once you enter your personal information to determine your filing status and enter your income forms (1099-R/1099-SSA) TurboTax will determine if any of your social security is taxable.  You can check line 6b on your form 1040.

Here are steps to view your form 1040 in online versions.

1. Select "Tax Tools" in the left hand menu
2. Select "Tools"
3. Select "View Tax Summary"
4. Select "Preview My 1040" in the left hand menu

If not, exclude social security and check the filing requirements based on your filing status in Publication 501, Table 1. Generally, if your gross income is below the standard deduction for your filing status you do not need to file.

Single                                                                                                                $13,850

Married filing jointly or Qualifying surviving spouse                                  27,700

Head of household                                                                                           20,800

You can check Tables 6, 7 or 8 in Publication 501 for other possible standard deduction amounts.
