    Please clarify your question.

    • Did you maintain a dwelling in GA for the whole year?
    • Did you intend to go back to GA when you went to WA?
    • Did you establish residence in WA?

Please contact us again to provide some additional details. or with any additional questions.

Thanks for the response, here are the details:

    • Did you maintain a dwelling in GA for the whole year?
      • I had an address in GA but during the time I was in WA, I had sublet my apartment to someone.
    • Did you intend to go back to GA when you went to WA?
      • Yes, I intended to return.
    • Did you establish residence in WA?
      • Not sure what this means - I lived there for 3 months, was interning at a company, made bulk of my income for the year over there, and was living there only.

You were a full year GA resident. You just worked an internship out of state for the summer- a temporary absence. WA has no state tax so you won't file a return with them.

If you did some of the things below and established a WA residence, then you can file a GA part year resident return.

Here are some things states look at when determining residency from The Tax Book:

    • Registering to vote and voting in the new state.
    • Purchasing residential property.
    • Titling and registering vehicles.
    • Paying state income tax to another state
    • Notifying the state of previous legal residence/domicile of the change in state of legal residence/domicile.
    • Preparing a last will and testament which indicates the new state of legal residence/domicile
