Question

I'm 63 and TT is incorrectly deducting my pension and a Roth Conversion (both 1099-R) from my state taxable income using Form 4884. Why is this and how do I correct it?

I noticed that TurboTax did not apply this deduction on my 2023 taxes but did for 2024. According to the Form 4884 instructions, I am not old enough to deduct my pension and IRA distributions from my taxable income on my Michigan state tax return.

In tax year 2023, Michigan began a four-year phase-out of its retirement income tax. By the 2026 tax year, pensions and income from 401(k) and IRA withdrawals will be fully exempt from state income tax. In the meantime, you may qualify for tax relief depending on your age or occupation.
