Question

I'm 73. I made a withdrawal from IRA in 2022 and didn't realize I had to pay taxes on it. How do it correct this?

How do I correct the taxes?  I didn't file in 2022 because my income is below the level.

If you were required to file a 2022 return, but did not, file it now.

I assume you got a 1099R for it?  Was there any tax withholding taken out in box 4 or 17?  You can file to get the withholding back if you aren't required to file.  Will your IRA withdrawal put you over the income requirement?  Do you have other income including Social Security?  You don't have to file if your total income is less than the Standard Deduction.  Are you Married or Single?

For 2022 the standard deduction amounts are:

Single 12,950 + 1,750 for 65 and over or blind (14,700)

HOH 19,400 + 1,750 for 65 and over or blind (21,150)

Joint 25,900 + 1,400 for each 65 and over or blind (27,300/28,700)

Married filing Separate 12,950 + 1,400 for 65 and over or blind (14,350)

Sorry it's too late to start a 2022 or prior online return or use the mobile app, either on Turbo Tax or the IRS. And too late to efile 2022.

If you need to start 2022 you can buy the Desktop download here
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products
You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on.

If you have a simple return and want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand. Here are some basic forms.....

Here is the 2022 1040 return
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040--2022.pdf

or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors,
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s--2022.pdf

2022 1040 Instructions
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040gi--2022.pdf

2022 EIC and Tax Tables
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040tt--2022.pdf

Schedules 1-
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s1--2022.pdf

Don’t forget your state. And you will have to print and mail your returns. So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them. You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places. Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Then when you file for 2023 you need to enter 0 for the 2022 AGI since you are filing 2022 late.
