Question

I qualified for an AOTC but what exactly does this mean? I had zero income in 2020 and this is my first time doing taxes. Is this illegal? Do I pay this back?

My mom put me as a dependent on her 2019 return but I turned 24 in july 2020. I have no idea what I am doing.

If she claimed you as her dependent for tax year 2019 and she was, in fact, supporting you (paying more than 50% of your living expenses - even if you were to have been away at school) for the year. For 2020, if she is still supporting you (again, paying more than 50% of your expenses, she can still put you on her return and file her status as head of household and could qualify for other deductions and credits, but you would not be her dependent due to age and other matters of status.
