Whether the distribution is from a pension or an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), you need to be concerned about Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)

If you inherit an IRA, you must begin taking RMDs by December 31 of the year after the year of the IRA owner's death, based on the longer of:

  • Your life expectancy (recalculated each year), or.
  • The IRA owner's remaining life expectancy.

I recommend you talk with your financial adviser to make sure you are taking out the RMDs.  They do not have to be taken out of each account as long as the total distribution meets the requirement. Penalties for not taking out the RMD are steep (50%).
