Now that you're retired, you probably don't have W-2 wages or self-employment income. However, you may be collecting a pension, Social Security benefits, or distributions from a retirement plan, such as a 401(k). When you start your return in TurboTax, we'll ask questions about your income and determine which 1040 tax form you need to file.

I tried TurboTax and found it impossible to use for retirement tax filling. I went to a CPA and have been for the last 4 years. Until TT advertises they have a tax solution for retirement situations I won’t bother with TT. I used it for years until I retired. It was a frustrating experience at best.

Retiree situations are various and range from those with Social Security and interest, to people with pensions, IRAs, Social Security, dividends, interest, stock sales, and self-employment.

TurboTax can help with all tax scenarios. The common retirement income situations are found in the Personal Income section.

Under the section Retirement Plans and Social Security are:

  • Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099)
  • IRA, 401(k), Pension Plans (1099-R)
  • Canadian Registered Pension Income

Each button can help to guide the retired person through the tax return.
