Question

I took $5,000 from cash and put it into a 529. Do I enter this as negative (-$5,000) for the contribution amount?

    529 Plan Contributions are not deductible on the federal return.   They may be deductible on your state return though.   What state are you filing a return for?

    This is for New York State. 

    I think I figured it out... it should be entered without the negative sign.
