Question

I took a withdrawal from a ROTH IRA to pay for qualified higher education expenses (college tuition). A form 5329 can indicate that. How can I indicate that to TT?

TT has questions about whether this money was used for the purchase of a first home or disaster, but not for education.  Where can this be indicated?

It depends on the code in box 7 of your form 1099-R.  When you look at box 7 on your 1099-R:

  • code 1 means no known exception and the program will ask you,  Did you use your IRA to pay for any of these expenses? This will generate  form 5329. Be sure answer all the questions after entering your form.
  •  If you have a code 2, you don't need the form as your 1099-R is already coded for an exception.,
