if I'm filing social security payments only (I'm retired), what employment category do I use?

    No, your Social Security income is not considered to be unemployment.  

     

    There is a separate category within TurboTax to enter Social Security income.  Look for Retirement Plans and Social Security.

     

    If Social Security income is all you received for the year, then you probably do not need to file a tax return.  Social Security income is non-taxable unless you have other taxable income that exceeds a certain amount based on your filing status.
