My father has no retirement, only SS. He sold his home and paid off his mortgage and new home he built on my property last year. Does he need to file any type of tax return?

Probably not.  But to be sure, take a look at the following TurboTax help article that outlines the filing requirements for a Federal return.  As long as he is not using the Married Filing Separate filing status and Social Security is the only source of income, there should not be a filing requirement.

Do I need to file a federal return this year?
